“Having grown up twix Biggin Hill and Kenley airfields at a time when the RAF still had Battle of Britain events the subject was always part of my life, and especially when I started flying from both airfields. In the mid 60’s I discovered (after a three day search) a long lost Hurricane lying in a Kent wood which still had its rather ‘burnt’ Merlin engine in situ.”
This 82nd anniversary talk (debate) explores the background to this great event which changed the course of modern history, and is still a subject that continues to fascinate with both myth and mystery. Although a ‘talk’ it is much better when it goes down the debate route as there are always new avenues to ‘explore’, not to mention why we had to make do with far less machines than originally anticipated! We will also have a quick look at Cornwall’s part in producing the High Octane fuel that enabled the Rolls Merlin engine to be boosted for extra power. Look forward to seeing you all and dealing with the ‘searching’ questions. Peter Channon
The AEROCLUB talk starts at 19.30. Please contact Jay on 01208 821419 if you would like to book a pre-talk meal (18.00 onwards), from Diner 31.
